Artist’s Statement

Though my work is representational, the abstract composition is the underlying element of a piece. My paintings have dealt with the interplay of light and shadow on mostly architectural subjects. It is not the architectural structures alone that interested me but also the shapes and patterns created by light on urban and rural structures. Returning to the basics of drawing, I find  the making of marks on paper fundamental to the process of making art. I have always been drawn to an artist’s draftsmanship. While I have progressed from buildings and structures to nature, the contrast of light and dark and uncomplicated and complex shapes are part of my work.
